What Michael Bloomberg Really Cares About

Bloomberg Diverts Food, Generators from Devastated Staten Island to NYC Marathon

“We’re going to die! We’re going to freeze! We got 90-year-old people!” Donna Solli told visiting officials.

Fresh off his “climate disruption”-driven endorsement of President Obama, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has chosen to divert critical food supplies and power generators from desperate residents of Staten Island to Sunday’s New York City Marathon. Gothamist reports:

‘We Need Food, We Need Clothing’: Staten Island Residents Plead for Help 3 Days After Sandy

“Do you realize how many police officers you need for a marathon?” he asked. “There are people looting stores on Midland Avenue. There is looting taking place in the homes on the South Shore that were destroyed. That is where we need the police.”

The residents of Staten Island are pleading for help from elected officials, begging for gasoline, food and clothing three days after Sandy slammed the New York City borough.

“We’re going to die! We’re going to freeze! We got 90-year-old people!” Donna Solli told visiting officials. “You don’t understand. You gotta get your trucks down here on the corner now. It’s been three days!”

Staten Island was one of the hardest-hit communities in New York City. More than 80,000 residents are still without power. Many are homeless, and at least 19 people died on Staten Island because of the storm.

NY National Guard Suddenly Decides Hurricane Relief Trumps Mock Disaster Drill

The New York guardsmen were scheduled to conduct mock operations at an urban search and rescue site in Columbia, Missouri, along with troops from Puerto Rico.

Hours after being contacted by Danger Room, the New York Army National Guard on Tuesday night abruptly reversed a decision to send hundreds of soldiers out-of-state in the midst of the Hurricane Sandy relief effort.

The troops were previously declared unavailable to help New York recover from the state’s biggest hurricane in centuries. Instead, they were assigned to fight a fake disaster.

But hours before they were set to deploy, the troops’ participation in a week-long exercise in Missouri known as “Vigilant Guard” was cancelled. The exercise is designed to test the response to a mock earthquake in the Midwest. Until Tuesday, that previously scheduled drill took precedence over the real-world catastrophe that struck the East Coast. It was declared a bureaucratic near-impossibility to redeploy hundreds of guardsmen at a moment’s notice, even at a moment when so many are in need

Other soldiers are continuing their rescue work, even though the chest-high waters have receded. A report comes in: 180 senior citizens are trapped on in a six-floor nursing home, and have to be evacuated. Many of them are too weak to walk, however, so the guardsmen have to carry them gently down the steps. It takes hours.

Expanding Bloomberg’s Large-Size Soda Ban To Popcorn

"The popcorn isn't a whole lot better than the soda,"

Emboldened by their effort to ban large drinks, members of New York City’s Board of Health voiced support for putting limits on popcorn, too. But, the president of NATO says this “silly” idea won’t help fight obesity.

As reported by MyFoxNY:

“At the meeting, some of the members of board said they should be considering other limits on high-calorie foods.”
