It’s nearly impossible to overstate the impact social media has on our world.
This report is an effort to gauge the prevalence of one of these destructive prejudices – anti-Semitism – on one social media platform: Twitter – by examining the one-year period from January 29, 2017 to January 28, 2018.
ADL frequently fields reports from constituents who describe an atmosphere of anti-Semitism on Twitter, including harassment from anti-Semitic trolls. We issued previous studies on this phenomenon. Media reports reflect this phenomenon as well. Experts at the ADL’s Center on Extremism (COE) wanted to go beyond those reports, to understand the problem in greater detail while examining tweets for nuance and context. How many anti-Semitic tweets are posted on Twitter during any given week? How do we know the tweets truly are anti-Semitic? What if some of these tweets are intended to convey an ironic or critical message?
Using a proprietary, wide-ranging query, as well as statistical methods and expert analysis, COE analysts were able to determine that roughly 4.2 million anti-Semitic tweets were posted and reposted on Twitter in the one-year period specified above. We estimate that the tweets were issued by approximately three million unique handles.
Of course, 4.2 million tweets is a very small number out of the trillions of tweets sent on the platform each year. But that does not negate the lived experience of Jews who have found Twitter to be a toxic environment. This number is still large enough to underscore the powerful harassment that exists and the ease with which a relative handful of users can infect our shared social media environment with negative stereotypes and conspiracy theories about Jews.
And those who dare confront the Nazis and Anti-Semites risk being “locked out” of their Twitter accounts by what Twitter calls (with implied plausible deniability) their “Automated system”. Jew hatred is alive and well with the able assistance of Twitter’s “Automated Anti-Semite Bots”!
If you really want to regain your Twitter account you must break E. U. regulations (GDPR) to do so. Twitter has clearly embraced the cyber-gangster business model on this one!
What is GDPR?
Lawmakers in Brussels passed the new legislation in April 2016, and the full text of the regulation has been published online.
Misusing or carelessly handling personal information will bring fines of up to 20 million euros ($23.4m; £17.5m), or 4% of a company’s global turnover.
The mass harvesting of user’s private cell-phone numbers is perhaps the most serious and potentially dangerous of Twitter’s unethical practices.
The scam goes like this: Gullible Tweeter users are unexpectedly and arbitrarily “Locked out” of their twitter accounts with the bullshit excuse of “suspected automated behaviour”,,,, according to Twitter’s “Automated, Robot (Bot)” ! No human review of the [thousands of] cases is allowed, just automated responses demanding the surrender of the user’s cell phone details. Here is a screen grab from the Twitter web-site.
“Others will be able to find you by your phone number”……or of course Twitter can sell your number to spammers or worse. Using the Geo-Location feature in a user’s cell phone and reverse look-up, hackers can locate your home address and assume your identity for illegal purposes, all because Twitter has gone on a phishing spree!
If you hassle Twitter enough their robots will spam your email account with more demands to surrender your cell phone details:
Of course if you do not mind having your personal details revealed to Identity Thieving, Phone Soliciting, Bank Account Draining hackers.… none of this will bother you. For the rest of you, I’d urge caution when confronted by the demands of Twitter’s Automatons.
Me? I don’t have a cell phone. Security comes first in this household.
